Imagine yourself going on Netflix to look for your next show or movie to watch. You select a movie from its extensive catalog because its title or photo caught your eye. But after five or ten minutes of viewing it, you realize that it’s not something you’re interested in. So your search starts all over again.

Netflix released a video preview feature on December 6 to optimize your experience by cutting the time spent on deciding what to watch.

“We know we have less than 90 seconds to capture someone’s attention and get them excited about a title.” – Netflix

Sometimes the synopsis doesn’t deliver enough information to help you decide on whether to watch a show or movie. It will give you the general plot, but there’s not much you can learn about the characters or tone of each title. And that’s where the new video preview feature comes in.

While you hover over a title card, the video preview will start to play. The video is not a teaser or a trailer. Instead, it will give you a sense of the tone and characters, which will (hopefully) help you decide on whether the title is the right show or movie for you.

The new feature will also be available on Netflix-enabled devices within the next few months. This includes most video game consoles and smart TVs.

Netflix’s video preview news has followed close behind its announcement on allowing users to download most of its catalog to watch offline at a later time. Perhaps there will be other new features introduced soon.
